Bosnia and Herzegovina
Description: Bosnia & Herzegovina is located in southeast Europe bordering the Adriatic Sea, with Croatia to the north and west, Serbia to the east and Montenegro to the southeast.
Climate: Hot summer and cold winters. Areas of high elevation have short, cool summers and long severe winters.
Capital: Sarajevo
Population: 4,552,198 (2007 estimate)
Ethnic Diversity: 48% Bosniak / 37.1% Serb / 14.3% Croat / 0.6% Other.
Languages: Bosnian / Croatian / Serbian.
Economy: Bosnia & Herzegovina is one of the poorest republics in the former Yugoslav Federation. Agriculture is almost all privately owned but farms are small and inefficient and the country is traditionally a net importer of food. However, the private sector is growing and foreign investment is slowly increasing, but government spending, at around 40% of adjusted GDP, remains unreasonably high. The convertible mark or BAM- the national currency introduced in 1998 - is pegged to the euro, and confidence in the currency and the banking sector has increased.
